As part of Phase 1 of Dublin City University’s Capital Development Programme (2015–2021), MOLA Architecture led the integrated design team for the transformation of the University’s Student Centre on the Glasnevin campus. The project delivered a three-storey 3,600 sqm extension and the refurbishment of 2,600 sqm within the existing HUB building, creating a consolidated 6,200 sqm student centre for a rapidly growing university community.
Funded by student levies and private benefactors, the “U” Building brings clubs, societies, services and support functions together under one roof. Its spatial organisation is anchored by a tall central “all-hands” auditorium that serves as the civic room of the building. Bridges, balconies and open stairs animate the space and establish visual connections between floors, allowing the centre to operate both as an everyday social environment and as a venue for larger gatherings.
A varied programme of informal social rooms, food and beverage spaces, meeting suites, multi-purpose rooms and student support facilities accommodates multiple modes of participation. Since completion in 2018, and following its inauguration by the President of Ireland, the building has hosted multiple large-scale events, confirming its role as a catalyst for student culture and a focal point of campus life.
