Masterplan and Sports Hall, Loreto College

In 2022, MOLA Architecture won a ‘Think Big’ competition at Loreto College, St Stephen’s Green, with work commencing in 2023. The competition reimagined the existing school campus as a cohesive, future-focused environment that supports learning, community, and wellbeing, while responding sensitively to its historic urban setting.

The redevelopment is being delivered across four phases, two of which are now complete. Phase 1 comprised the refurbishment and extension of the existing Sports Hall, followed by Phase 2, which delivered upgrades to the school’s Canteen and Auditorium facilities. Phase 3 will involve the relocation and enhancement of the Home Economics rooms, while Phase 4, the largest phase, will introduce a new STEAM building incorporating a dining hall and library.

The Sports Hall refurbishment included comprehensive fabric upgrades, with the installation of an external wall insulation render system, a new insulated roof, and a full upgrade of mechanical and electrical services. A new first-floor extension enhances the building’s functionality and presence on campus.

To meet the school’s requirement for a flexible assembly space, retractable tiered seating was incorporated into the hall, allowing it to accommodate large school events while maintaining its use as a sports facility. The project also provides a new gym, new changing and shower facilities, and office accommodation, delivering a modern, adaptable facility at the heart of the school.
