STEAM Building, Alexandra College

As part of the continued implementation of the Alexandra College Campus Masterplan, MOLA Architecture was invited to take part in a competitive design process for a new STEAM building, emerging as the winning team in 2025. The masterplan, revised by MOLA in 2023, sets out a long-term framework for a car-free collegiate campus organised around a series of landscaped quadrangles and three interconnected hubs for Junior School, Senior School and Boarding. The STEAM building forms a major phase in realising this vision, allowing the College to consolidate specialist teaching environments and remain at the forefront of educational best practice.

The proposal is conceived as a landmark building at the Milltown Road entrance, creating a new point of arrival and completing the reorientation of the campus. A compact plan arranges classrooms and specialist suites around a tall central atrium, which operates as the social and organisational spine of the building while mediating the pronounced change in level between the lower and upper campus. A material palette of brick and timber lends warmth and permanence and sits comfortably within the emerging architectural language of the College.

Earlier phases of the masterplan have already begun to transform campus life, most notably the refurbishment and extension of the 750 sqm Dining Hall, which now provides a brighter, more spacious and adaptable communal setting for everyday use. Together, these projects demonstrate the impact of strategic campus planning aligned with high-quality architectural delivery.
