MOLA Architecture was engaged by The King’s Hospital, a Church of Ireland coeducational independent day and boarding school in Palmerstown, Dublin, to create a vision for the future evolution of the school and its lands.
A comprehensive masterplan was developed to anticipate the integration of STEM facilities while improving circulation, wayfinding and the quality of both learning and boarding environments. The plan is defined by a clear and simple organisation: learning spaces are grouped by department, with communal areas providing the central structure. At its heart sits the Gallery, conceived as the main circulation spine, connecting existing and future academic expansion while encouraging informal social interaction. The Gallery links the reception hall to a new Town Hall, a flexible space for students to gather, perform and socialise. Opened to the outdoors and framing views of the landscape and courtyards, it dissolves the boundaries between internal and external space.
The first phase of work, the refurbishment of the Boarding Accommodation, was completed in spring 2019, delivering contemporary living spaces that support student life. MOLA continues to work with the school on proposals for enhanced sports facilities and new amenity areas, shaping a campus that reflects the evolving needs of its community.
